Big Data: "Like Moneyball for Geeks"

Data nowadays is one almighty jungle and Big Data Analytics is the hunter in the jungle...it's also the 'A' in SMAC

2013 is turning into a big year for Big Data. Colorfully described by one commentator recently as being "like Moneyball for geeks", Big Data is - quite literally - the Next Big Thing.

Put very bluntly, data nowadays is one almighty jungle and Big Data Analytics is the hunter in the jungle. One very succinct definition was given by a senior executive at Accenture, Lloyd Altman:

"Big data, as it sounds, is lots and lots of data - inside your business, on the Internet, in the news. It’s information you want to be able to harness, categorize and integrate into your decision-making process. And that’s where cloud computing comes in. You can use the cloud as receptors for all of that data, whether that’s your own cloud, a private cloud or with a cloud provider.

In that respect, cloud computing and big data are closely tied."

It's also the 'A' in SMAC - Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud.

Companies have been striving to harness and leverage the power of their data assets for decades. Now major U.S. corporations and government agencies are finally realizing business value from Big Data.

According to a Wikibon report, the total Big Data market already reached $11.4 billion in 2012. Meantime research firm IDC is predicting that the the market will grow revenue at 31.7% a year, a trajectory that would swell Big Data up to being a $23.8 billion market in 2016, a prediction that triggered GigaOM writer Derrick Harris to remark: "IDC says big data will be $24B market in 2016; I say it’s bigger."

Hot topics that the industry will be discussing at the upcoming 4th International Big Data Expo in Silicon Valley [November 4-7, 2013] include:

Over the last few years the healthcare ecosystem has revolved around innovations in Electronic Health Record (HER) based systems. This evolution has helped us achieve much desired interoperability. Now the focus is shifting to other equally important aspects – scalability and performance. While applying cloud computing environments to the EHR systems, a special consideration needs to be given to the cloud enablement of Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA), i.e....
Cloud and Big Data present unique dilemmas: embracing the benefits of these new technologies while maintaining the security of your organization’s assets. When an outside party owns, controls and manages your infrastructure and computational resources, how can you be assured that sensitive data remains private and secure? How do you best protect data in mixed use cloud and big data infrastructure sets? Can you still satisfy the full range of reporting, compliance and regulatory requirements? I...
Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google. Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices. Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using...
